The StormGeo system, known as Seaware EnRoute Live (SERL), uses a physics‐based propulsion model to simulate different alternatives and conditions for vessel routes.

The technology then uses a motion sensor, delivered and installed by Kongsberg Seatex, to assess vessel motion in real time.

As a result, SERL is able to calculate the optimum route based on forecasted weather, which in turn enhances crew safety and minimises the risk of cargo damage.

Currently, an old version of the system is used on 25 of WW Ocean’s vessels, but this will be upgraded to the new version before the end of the year.

Alterations to SERL include an improved user interface and more sophisticated algorithm in the route optimisation. The algorithm is now able to assess the speed and course setting of several thousand route alternatives to find the option with the lowest fuel consumption.
