"From the first shipment, WWL has streamlined the process with each load to create a totally synchronised system between the Detank factory in Wuhu to the port in Shanghai to the units arriving here in the UK and being delivered to our premises.”
Riding the back of a recovery in the housing market, the UK construction sector has been strong in 2014. A survey carried out by Markit, a global financial information services provider, recently showed the construction industry in the UK expanded at its fastest pace in seven months in August, boosting job creation and offering opportunities for new suppliers to enter the market.
For Chinese heavy machinery manufacturer Chery Detank, the timing couldn’t be better. Established in 2010, Chery Detank is an international corporation with business sectors focusing on construction machinery, special vehicles and marine equipment. Within the construction sector the company supplies its customers with excavators, mining trucks, forklifts and road rollers across four continents and numerous countries, including the UK where its official European representative is located.
Chery Detank required a customised supply chain solution that could get its heavy equipment from its factory in Wuhu, China, to the port in Shanghai and on to several Detank UK locations. This solution would have to come from a logistics supplier that had the experience and expertise streamlining the entire process while taking into account local time-critical delivery requirements.
"Following our research on potential global shipping agents to handle the shipment of all products for Detank UK from China to the UK, we held several meetings with various companies,” says Lash Saranna, Managing Director of Detank UK. “Only WWL was prepared to work with us to our timescales and precise route planning.”
What started in early May 2014 as a queried response to a quote request for two units from Shanghai to the UK evolved into a meeting between Detank UK and WWL UK about importing factory-new excavators and forklifts from Shanghai to the UK. WWL UK submitted a supply chain solution offering ocean transport from Shanghai to several Detank UK locations, including terminal services in Southampton and inland distribution via WWL ALS.
“The first meeting was used to introduce WWL, and give a detailed description of our various products and offer routing,” says Steve Barfoot, WWL UK Head of Customer Services. “We scheduled the best options to suit the potential requirements of Detank UK to introduce this new manufacturer to the UK market."
The solution was a perfect fit for Chery Detank.
"From the first shipment, WWL has streamlined the process with each load to create a totally synchronised system between the Detank factory in Wuhu to the port in Shanghai to the units arriving here in the UK and being delivered to our premises,” says Saranna. “We are extremely pleased with the service and knowledge of everyone at WWL, as well as the quality of their vessels as they truly are super ships."
