In 2015, WWL strengthened its compliance framework. Existing tools, such as the Code of Conduct, the internal QMS system and an anonymous Ethics Alert Line, were supplemented with new ones.
The existing Competition Compliance Manuals, assisting the WWL organisation in ensuring compliance with national and international competition rules, were enhanced by compliance guidebooks for South Africa and China. To ensure easy understanding and increased impact, many of these manuals are in local languages.
This year’s new e-learning module was focused on Preventing Anti-Competitive Practices. Through this course, employees learn about WWL’s position on anti-competitive behaviour and how to promote it. Fully 92 per cent of all office employees completed the training, and they also applied learned knowledge to various practical example cases.
Another strong and efficient tool consists of recurring compliance sessions, conducted by legal counsel. In 2015, 13 such interactive sessions were presented to 406 staff members, covering 11 countries.
The WWL Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption (ABAC) Handbook, launched on December 9, builds on WWL‘s ABAC Policy and works as a practical guide. It includes information on the meaning of “bribe” or “extortion” and guides readers on how to act and react if exposed to a situation where a demand is made. Also available as a downloadable app, the guide can be shared easily with external parties.
In addition, WWL continued its work as a founding member of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network by supporting its various collective action initiatives. In 2015, among other things, a collective action was successfully started to fight corruption in the Suez Canal.
