CO2 – Relative

Grams CO2 per tonne kilometre, 3rd party verified in accordance with ISO 14064

In 2016 the fleet average carbon intensity (g CO2 / tonne kilometre) came out at 31.96, which was essentially the same result as the previous year and was primarily a reflection of the continuing difficult conditions in global freight markets.

CO2 – Total

Tonnes, 3rd party verified in accordance with ISO14064

There was a 2% reduction in the total CO2 result relative to the previous year, what was mainly attributable to a marginal reduction in the total amount of cargo work done.

NOx – Average

Average grams NOx / kWhr as per IAPP certificate values of main engines in owned fleet 

The addition of 2 HERO vessels along with the recycling of the fleet’s three oldest vessels contributed to a record low of 13.83g NOx / kWhr.  The result represents a 2.5% year-on-year reduction and was the first time that the result was more than 30% less than the 1999 baseline.


SOx – Average

% sulphur in fuel used

The overall average sulphur content of the fuel used rose 4% relative to the previous year to 1.97%.  The human impact of this result was offset by the introduction of WWL AS’ new global <0.1%S at berth policy, which extends the benefits of the <0.1%S ECAs to all ports called by WWL’s owned vessels.


SOx – Total


Total SOx for 2016 rose by 2% to 27,187t compared to the previous year, reflecting the slightly higher average sulphur content in the fuel used.


Fleet renewal

Two new HERO class vessels (Theben and Themisis) came into service, while the three oldest vessels in the fleet (Falstaff, Medea and Isolde) were sent for recycling under our own supervision at an approved, craned dry dock in China.
