WWL launches Gothenburg as a Baltic transhipment hub

WWL has signed a contract with the Port of Gothenburg to establish the Swedish port as a transhipment centre for its services in the Baltic region.

To coincide with this development a new transhipment service has been established by WWL, specifically for high and heavy RoRo cargoes emanating from the Americas and Asia and destined for St Petersburg, Russia.

The intention is that the service runs weekly from Gothenburg to St Petersburg via Kotka in Finland. The service will most typically carry agricultural and construction equipment as well as vehicles.

Kristofer Andrén, Managing Director, WWL Gothenburg, said: "This is a key development in establishing Gothenburg as a gateway for cars and agricultural and construction equipment emanating from Asia and North America and destined for Finland and Russia."

The new services make transport more efficient as vehicles can be shipped on LCTC-vessels all the way to Gothenburg, instead of being transhipped from various ports in Europe using smaller feeder vessels.

The use of larger vessels for a longer part of the journey also decreases the environmental impact on the Baltic region.

The new services will be maintained by the 1993 built 16,940 dwt MV Vinni. The ship is capable of carrying a wide range of cargoes including cars, buses, trucks and high and heavy RoRo machinery, such as construction and agricultural equipment, as well as other non-containerised cargoes.

The vessel has three RoRo decks with a height up to 5.6 metres as well as car decks. The stern ramp is 9 metres wide and has a carrying capacity of 120 tonnes. WWL has been using the Port of Gothenburg since 1912.
