Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics was a notable presence at the recent Breakbulk Europe Conference in Antwerp.

Recovery forecasts and upcoming challenges for the various sectors of the breakbulk industry were highlighted at 5th Annual Breakbulk Europe Conference in Antwerp May 19-20, organized by Breakbulk Magazine and The Journal of Commerce. Breakbulk Europe 2010 posted a record turnout of 3,300 attendees and 125 exhibitors, 10 percent higher than 2009.

WWL’s Kraass calls for “paradigm shift”
Kai Kraass, WWL Chief Operating Officer, participated in a panel debating New Regulations and Compliance Issues that will impact breakbulk cargo. Panelists discussed regulations covering security, health, safety and environment, as well as taxes and fees and how shippers, carriers and forwarders can work together to comply.

“Rising fuel costs due to environmental regulations will go a long way toward driving fuel saving strategies, but "paradigm shifts" are required in the logistics and shipping industry to reach ambitious future emission reduction goals”  was a key message from Kai Kraass.

He compared logistics to an individual race to get speed in the supply chain, but said a 'relay race' would be a more useful approach. Cooperation between the various links of the supply chain can help identify untapped efficiencies.
