Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Season 2016/2017
In view of the upcoming new Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Season, the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has developed measures to manage the 2016/2017 seasonal risk of infestations in sea cargo shipped from the United States. The 2016/2017 measures outlined in the Industry Notice 75-2016 are largely the same as the 2015/2016 measures, with season dates, treatments, and requirements for management of target goods unchanged.
These measures are relevant for clients in the import and shipping industries, including importers and customs brokers associated with the importation of targeted break bulk and containerised vehicles, boats, machinery and machinery parts shipped from the United States from 1 September 2016 to 30 April 2017 inclusive.
The main change is regarding the targeted goods. These changes became necessary based on detections made and information gathered from surveillance conducted during the 2015/2016 response. The target goods will:
- include break bulk machinery parts (not containerised)
- include machinery from additional tariffs.
- exclude lower risk goods such as small all-terrain vehicles, jet skis, canoes and buoys.
AQIS Commodity codes will be created to assist with the exclusions of lower risk goods.
The measures will remain in place for the entire season unless pest infestations are detected. Should this occur, the department may impose emergency requirements similar to those implemented during the 2014/2015 season. The department is also monitoring the risk of brown marmorated stink bugs from other parts of the world and will develop measures if required.
Please check any current updates on the DAWR website here.
For cargo imported into New Zealand, the treatment continues as per current requirement. The treatment for NZ cargo is all the year around. Information for MPI requirements for importing of Vehicles and Machinery can be found here.
