The vortex turbine generates the same amount of energy as a large dam does, but without the dam. With each turbine delivering 3 to 100kw, Turbulent hydroelectric plants operate at a high efficiency on water streams with a low height difference.

Ray Fitzgerald, President of the Atlantic region at Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, said of the winner: “Turbulent is the WWL 2016 Orcelle Award recipient for the Vortex Turbine – an innovative engineering concept that provides a low-cost, reliable and practical hydro-powered energy alternative to help build and sustain small communities around the world.”

The Orcelle Award, established by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics in 2008, recognises a sustainable technology or solution that promotes reduction in emissions on land or sea. The winner is selected from a carefully vetted shortlist by the delegates participating in the Ocean Exchange, an annual event that WWL has sponsored since 2012 to extend the reach of the Orcelle Award programme.

This year the Ocean Exchange selected 15 finalists. Besides the Orcelle Award, the 2016 Gulfstream Navigator Award went to Sun Buckets from the United States. In addition,13 other innovators presented their sustainable solutions to 23 experts from around the world at the sixth annual Ocean Exchange event held in Savannah, Georgia, from November 9 to 11:
