Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) was facing a logistical challenge. The company dispatches about 100 cars a year by air shipment from its Chennai facility to customers, and was keen to have a cost effective packaging solution that was both compliant with international standards and adhered to quarantine rules.

With a partnership that stretches back to 2010 and a presence at the facility in Chennai, not to mention staff with packaging competence, WWL was particularly well suited to offer up a solution.

Packaging is mainly about designing and improving the convenience of delivery. The solution involved novel lashing methods (lashing was localised for each tire area and supported by wheel stoppers) and improved packaging design for each car. Bubble sheets and stretch film masking was wrapped around the car before finally being sealed in plywood pallets to comply with standards while ensuring wastage reduction. The result was a perfectly secured car within a plywood box, ready for airfreight.

Over the last five months, WWL India has dispatched 35 cars in this fashion, and in the process has reduced material spending by 5 percent and transportation cost by 30 percent for RNAIPL.
