Since its establishment 16 years ago, WWL has actively worked to progress the environmental agenda within the shipping industry. And whilst the industry’s environmental footprint remains significant, much progress has been made since we introduced our voluntary 1,5 % low sulphur fuel policy in 2004. At that time, everyone told us it could not be done. But we stuck to our principles and have delivered on keeping average sulphur content in fuel at below 1.5 % ever since. Today, the SECA 0.1% sulphur limit applies for all vessels, and the global sulphur cap is set to move from 3.5 % to 1.5% by 2020 or 2025.

This is why we believe that the best way to reduce environmental risk and cost is to be an environmental frontrunner. To remain true to this course, our daily activities are guided by a 5-part strategic environmental framework:

•We focus on high impact changes.

•We hold ourselves accountable and transparent in our environmental commitments.

•We seek to exceed our responsibilities today to reduce risk and cost tomorrow.

•We invest in tomorrow's technologies today through new vessel designs and retrofits and supporting early stage technology development.

•We are humble before the challenges we face and recognise we don't have all the answers. Therefore we seek active partnerships with varied stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions.

As a company we recognize our responsibilities towards our customers, towards the communities in which we live, and towards one another. Therefore, we practice what we call Responsible Logistics, taking a long term view in customer relations, with regards to the environment, on social responsibility and governance. In summary, doing our job with the next generation in mind.

The next steps in sustainability for shipping will need to be big. A lot has been done over the years to make our fleet as efficient as possible, both with regard to technology and operations, which accounts for the slowing pace of emission reductions.  But to take the next steps towards our zero emission vision will involve major technology shifts – such as new energy sources and propulsion systems. WWL will not shy away from the challenges these changes represent because we understand that sustainability is not an option.
